I took my car to thorney to have its rear diff rebuilt, while the mechanics at the garage seem reasonably competent when it comes to VXRs, the owner John is unfortunately a very different and unpleasant story. After dropping my car off I was supplied with a very old courtesy car that had seen better days and looked/felt poorly maintained. I drove it back but soon after the problems began. The alarm on the car activated and the key was not deactivating it, this lasted over an hour in a heavily residential area. Called up John and he suspected the battery on the key was dead, he apologized and said would send me a new key. By this time the alarm only stopped once the battery was completely drained, so when the new key arrived it was useless. Called John back up to arrange for them to come and fix the car or pick it up. John was immediately impossible to reason with, highly unprofessional and refused to pick up or even see his car to diagnose the problem. John completely lost his temper and became quite personal. He then refused to release my car until their dead one was returned to them, at my expense. This left me with no transport, which was a massive inconvenience. AA turned up and managed to get it on a flatbed and take it to thorney. As soon as my car was ready I got it out of theyre hands as quickly as I could. The mechanics at the garage were reasonable, helpful and easy to talk to. John however is the antithesis of that. If your like me with your pride and joy; trust and honesty in a mechanic is as important as their skill. While I do believe the mechanics at thorney have this, John has none of those things and I cannot possibly recommend anyone put theyre car or trust in him. Avoid thorney and save yourself a lot of unnecessary heart ache, there are dozens of other great garages out there where you are treated with respect and decency.
Ok
I've used them a lot over a number of years for a number of cars - maps, mods, repairs, servicing and some development.Probably over the years they've discouraged me from as much stuff as things I've actually had done. "We could do it, but it won't make any real difference, you're just wasting your money" or "We're not doing that, the gearbox won't take it" or my frequent favorite when getting new maps - "I don't care what you've read someone else claims they had done, we're not going to map it up to that, you'll be back in a month upset the turbos have blown".They can get very busy so sometimes there can be a bit of a wait to get booked in, but the flip side is they're not a main garage doing generic work and carrying lots of extra staff that need to be paid for by increased prices for us.The other positive to them being busy is never them finding new issues for the sake of it to drive up the bill. They are a bit of a trek for me to get there, so I wouldn't chose to do that if I didn't think it was worth it.Bottom line is I get a very high standard of work and advice, I'm treated well, billed fairly and always spoken to honestly.
Staff is awesome very accommodating and ready to answer any question you have. This is an Honest place, if there is something you do not need they will tell you. I certainly appreciate this. Big thanks to Tom, top guy!
Rip off merchants, make up things wrong with your car to get extra money. Read forum reviews for more info as this is mirrored by many others.
